You have a satisfying job and toil for your daily bread, get back home and you want to spend some quality time with family. You have hired a maid to take care of the things while your gone. She waters the garden, dusts the furniture, swabs the entire house, takes the dog for a walk and helps manage the entire house. When you and your spouse are back from a hard days work, all you want is the house in place and things in order. Your maid is paid well, she gets great food to eat and you also pay for her medicines and her children’s basic education. Then what do you do, if she takes advantage of the situation when you’re away…?

India, still developing, will remain so, if not worse, even after 20 years if we don’t start taking our country as our home. Who is the owner of this home… it’s you and me. Yes, we have chosen a maid to take care of our home… The Government. We pay the MP’s their salary, their perks, their medical allowances and all of them have all the comfort. We are away, doing our work, our daily chores, earning our income, and while we’re at it, we expect the MP’s and the Government to do their job… so that when our work is done, we want to find the roads smoothened and clean, the street lights working, the drains unclogged and electricity and clean water in the neighborhood.

When you’re back from office, what if you find juice spilt over the carpet, and the lampstand broken and some cash underneath the shelf was missing? Wouldn’t you call the maid and give her a yelling? Or would you just keep it within yourself and complain, murmur and mumble for hiring the wrong maid! Yes. All we Indians do and have been doing since our first Independence is only complain, murmur and mumble within ourselves. We never think that it is WE who control the Government and it is WE who can bring the wrong doers to book! We need to start now by considering anything outside our four walls as our home. Neither the politician nor my neighbor have the right to dirty and corrupt my home, because it belongs to me and my children as well.

So with writing this article have I done my duties? Of course not! Have I tried to be concerned and have I tried to take any steps for any change? Yes , I have. So is that it? Have I done the best I could to make a worthwhile (big or small) difference to neighborhood at least? Nope. I haven’t. So then am I to be blamed as well and should I just stop complaining about the hopelessness of things? Yes. I should.

India and its progress is not in the hands of The Government or the Judiciary, the Lokpal Bill or the Police force… India today, is in the hands of you and me. We are slow, we are lazy, we are complacent and the worst of all, we expect everything to happen online at the comfort of our desktop. So unless we stop our office work, take a good look at the maid who is ruining our home, and make her accountable for everything wrong so far, the worms are only going to multiply.

Happy Independence Day.
